Educational Software Design Process: the case of K-8 Science and Technology Course
Information and communication technologies can be used for several teaching-learning processes such as material design, development, presentation and evaluation. Through using computers in teaching-learning endeavors, the notion of Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) came into stage. CAI is mostly described as realizing instructional purposes through computers. Educational software programs are perhaps the most common applications among CAI tools. Several types of these programs could be listed in accordance with the purpose of the program such as tutorials, practice tools, educational games, problem solving tools and simulations. While developing educational software, it is crucial to bear in mind that the software development process requires collaboration of several professionals who are competent in different branches of the development process. When this perspective is taken into consideration, several processes are involved in the design and development of educational software including needs analysis, organizing the development team, determining project aims, analyzing target audience, design of the interface and relevant components, determining authoring tools to prepare the software, designing audio-visual contents, database management, implementation and evaluation. The current study presents a software development process realized to produce a courseware through following steps of analyzing, designing, development, implementation and evaluation. In this respect, contents of a “Science and Technology” course offered in 6th through 8th grades by the Turkish National Ministry of Education were reconstructed to be offered in CAI environments. It is aimed to use the courseware in actual classroom settings soon through ameliorating the collaboration between the university and schools of the National Ministry of Education, and through developing the current project via more current ICT tools.
