Awareness of Healthy Computer Use and Computer Ergonomics Among Prospective Teachers

With the growing increase of computer use in education, there is increasing concern about computer-related health problems. The lack of knowledge about healthy computer use and ergonomic factors cause computer-related health problems. It is important to train the computer users on healthy computer use. The current study aims to investigate the awareness of senior Education Faculty students regarding healthy use of computers along with the risks stemming from unhealthy use, and their knowledge of computer related ergonomics. 200 senior Education Faculty students at Anadolu University, Education Faculty participated in the current study. The data were collected in the spring semester of 2007. “Computer Use and Ergonomics Evaluation Scale” was developed to analyze the data. “Computer Use and Ergonomics Evaluation Scale” consist of three different subscales determined as “Physical Environment, Ergonomics and the Health Problems’ and 26 items of these subscales”. The aim of the instrument is to investigate knowledge about physical environment, ergonomics and the health problems associated with computer use. Descriptive statistics were used to examine opinions of students. More specifically, means, frequencies, and percentages were used and relevant parametric tests were conducted where necessary.
